Paolo Church in Foligno, Italy

The structural work includes the construction of a parish complex composed by a main volume containing a church, a secondary one containing sacristy, pastoral ministry rooms and priest’s house, and a third volume connecting the previous two, and containing the chapel for daily use.

Church building
This building is conceived as a box containing another box. The exterior volume, which defines the limits of the main congregation space, is 30×22.5 meters by 25.8 meters high. Both volumes are connected through a few elements (in the shape of a truncated pyramids), which create a series of openings on the walls and bring light to the inside of the building.

From a structural standpoint:
1. The foundations are made with 13 meter deep, fi100 piles, connected at the top with foundation beams (120x140Hcm). Corresponding to the 4 corners of the building, where the transmitted loads are bigger, plinths have been built; such plinths measure 4.9×4.9 meters in plan, 1.8 m. deep. Five fi100, 11 meter deep piles support each plinth.
2. The finished floor, at 1.5m from the ground level is built with a reinforced concrete slab set on the structural beam grid. The slab is 40 cm deep on the central area and built with concrete class Rck 350, exposure class XC3-XF1, SCC type for improved planarity and hole filling during the pouring phase. Along the perimeter area the depth of the slab goes up to 60 cm with concrete class Rck 500, SCC type; in this area the slab receives the load from the columns and cantilevers 70 cm. The cantilevered slab is reinforced with FeB44K rebars and Fe510B steel profiles to support the elevated structural efforts transmitted by the structure.
3. The structure of the external volume consists of reinforced concrete columns (80 cm depth and variable width) with reinforced concrete beams connecting them and defining wall openings. The walls in exposed concrete, are built with styrofoam panels covered with a 10cm reinforced concrete layer on both sides (fi8/15″x15″ mesh). For these elements reinforced concrete class Rck 400, SCC type was used. In coincidence with the columns, the concrete layer of the walls get deeper to guarantee a better connection between wall and column. Both concrete layers forming the walls are linked with each other through metal elements.
4. The internal wall is supported by a steel structure and wrapped with a metal mesh for plaster to be applied to it. Profiles used are HEB300, IPE300 and HEA 300 (Fe430), and round f30 bars (Fe510).
5. The roof structure is made with steel beams; the main beams in Fe510 steel, spanning 21 meters measure 90×60 cm. The secondary beams supporting the “hung” wall are 90cm deep by 30 cm wide (Fe 510), while the internal elements are 65cm deep trusses spanning 5.40 meters (Fe430). A second layer of 65cm deep trusses, perpendicular to the first one spans 2.45 meters. The roof is finished with a reinforced concrete slab.
6. The access ramp to the church is built with a prefabricated concrete slab (4+20+4 cm), bearing on 40cm “Poroton” walls. The foundations are built with 140x50H cm inverted T beams linked together with 40x30H elements; the structure connects to the church main body with a 1.5cn seismic joint.

Service building
The building is a long, low box measuring 52.40×2.00 meters by 8.30 meters high. It is composed by an elevated plane at +1.50 from the ground level (level 0), a first floor at +4.70 (level 1) and a flat roof.

From a structural standpoint:
1. The foundations are superficial, inverted beams, located at about -1.40 m. from the ground floor.
2. The floor at level 0 is made of prefabricated slab (4+26+4 cm) on 30 cm deep beams.
3. Level 1 is built in two different ways; in the areas where the slab is a double bay structure, a prefabricated slab system was used (4+26+4 cm on 30cm beams). Where the slabs are built as a single bay structure ISO-CAP slabs (4+26+4cm) on TMR slabs were used.
4. The roof floor has the same characteristics as level 1.
5. The stair is built as a 27cm deep concrete slab with 14f16 rebars.
6. The access ramps are built with UPN 300, IPE 200 and HEA 200 steel profiles (Fe430). The foundations are 90x90x60H cm and 70x220x60H plinths linked together with 30×30 cm elements; class Rck 300 exposure XC2 reinforced concrete was used.

Chapel for daily use
This structure connects the volume of the church with the service building; it measures 10.60×5.10 meters in plan, it’s 3.50 meters high.
The floor slab is built with HEB200 steel beams, the roof plane with HEB 160 steel beams. The seismic joint, at the ground floor, has a minimum dimension of 1.5cm while at the roof level it’s 4.5cm. minimum.
Profiles are placed every 2.12 meters and span about 5.10 meters. Both slab are built with metal decking, concrete slab and metal mesh.

For general structural calculations the following parameters have been considered:
Foundations seismic coefficient e = 1,0
Seismic intensity coefficient C = 0.10 S = 12
Structure coefficient b = 1,2
Seismic protection coefficient I = 1,2
