Studio Banana TV interviews ducth architect Winy Maas, who founded in 1993 the office MVRDV and in 2008 The Why Factory (T?F), the thinktank on future cities at Delft University of Technology.MVRDV was set up in Rotterdam (Netherlands) in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. In close collaboration the 3 principal architect directors produce designs and studies in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape design.

Early projects such as the headquarters for the Public Broadcasting Company VPRO and the WoZoCo housing for elderly in Amsterdam brought MVRDV to the attention of a wide field of clients and reached international acclaim. The more than sixty architects, designers and staff members of MVRDV are organized into teams headed by project leaders. In each team, different fields and scales of MVRDVs projects are reflected, both in the (international) background of team members and in the variation of work. To allow a wide range of commissions to be handled, special design teams are set up for individual commissions.

The work of MVRDV is published and exhibited worldwide and received many international awards. The monographic publications FARMAX (1998) and KM3 (2005) illustrate the work of the Rotterdam based office. MVRDV together with Delft University of Technology run a new think tank: The Why Factory (T?F). It is organized as a foundation. T?F wants to give argumentation back to the architectural and urbanistic World. T?F concentrates on the production of models and visualizations for future cities. ANYWHERE. T?F makes new cities! It researches possible directions of our urban futures: The Future City Program.

Luisa Lambri’s photographs stand in clear contrast to the established practice of architectural photography which has traditionally focused its attention on the exteriors of buildings. She travels the world photographing architectural interiors, often spending extended periods of time experiencing the buildings before she begins shooting. Her photographs have captured unexpected moments and observations of houses by architects the likes of Alvar Aalto, Richard Neutra, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner, Philip Johnson, Luis Barragán, Marcel Breuer or Álvaro Siza. Her images give a sense of experience of being in the space as her photographs not only capture the physical topology of these structures but elaborate on the profound psychological and emotional responses they elicit from their inhabitants. She primarily photographs private houses, focusing on the view from the inside to the outside thereby establishing a physical and conceptual position for herself and the viewer. These delicately crafted images oscillate between objective representations of space and Lambri’s perceptions and reactions. Lambri utilizes traditional as well as new digital printing techniques to move her photographs beyond pure documentation. The photographs reference minimalism and abstract painting, evoking moments of transcendence. Lambri’s selective framing and editing of the images pay homage to the Modernist aesthetic and establish an atmosphere that transcends the immediate function of the structures. The work realizes its full meaning when it is installed in a new space and in so doing establishes a new relationship between the viewer, the object and the space. Her work has been widely exhibited in places such as the Venice Art and Architecture Biennales, the Hammer Museum Los Angeles, the Carnegie Museum of Art or the Menil Collection.

MONU, magazine on urbanism is organizing a public debate on the topic of its last issue: MONU #13 – Most Valuable Urbanism on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in “De Machinist” in Rotterdam.

The debate will be moderated by Piet Vollaard and the panel will include four people with four different ideological backgrounds in order to discuss the topic in a rich and diverse way and to provoke a lively and productive clash of ideas and opinions. The panel members are: Floris Alkemade, Ashok Bhalotra, Jaap van den Bout, and Adriaan Geuze. The entire event will be in English. The topic “Most Valuable Urbanism” will be used as the starting point for the debate, but with a focus on the Dutch context and Dutch cities.

The aim of the debate is to discuss the topic “Most Valuable Urbanism” among the Dutch public and to critically reflect on traditional Dutch city values. The main questions of the debate will be: What is a good and what is a bad city? How should we evaluate cities in this day and age? Which city might be the most valuable, producing the most valuable urbanism and what kind of criteria should be applied to define valuable urbanism? What role do architects and urban designers play in the production of valuable urbanism?

’A’A’ / L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, the French/English bimonthly review founded in 1930, launches its # 378 issue guest edited by Winy Maas with MVRDV and The Why Factory. Beyond the usual guest editing, Winy Maas invited MVRDV and Why Factory staff to a collective effort. It resulted in a series of 70 articles representing a cross section of the current state of architecture which can be defined as being “uncertain”. With contributions by Beatriz Colomina, Aaron Betsky, Alain de Botton, Justin McGuirk, Jenny Holzer, Kobas Laksa, Markus Miessen, Toshiko Mori, Farshid Moussavi, Saskia Sassen, Mark Shepard and many others. The layout was created by young Dutch office weaponofchoice, which developed a browser on paper to interconnect the articles and themes in the magazine. ’A’A’ is out now in newsstands, bookstores and can be ordered at www.larchitecturedaujourdhui.fr.
In the summer of 2010 architecture is witnessing a situation best described as complex, confusing and uncertain. In the midst of the quest for survival, meaning and balanced choice, this uncertainty is also source of innovation and creation, a source for curiosity, over the fear, protectionism, conformism and repetition. As guest-editors MVRDV and The Why Factory exploited exactly this momentum as an opportunity for a densified process of creating, questioning and gathering. This lead to a wide spectrum of themes regarding the production of architecture and urbanism.

A monothematic approach would have been limiting since everything is inter-connected. This inter-connectivity itself describes the relations, the complexity, the richness, the differentiation and the surprises. This moves from mono-thematic to multi-thematic. A celebration and further acceleration of diversity: from multi-disciplinary to maxi-disciplinary. The collaborators of MVRDV and The Why Factory brainstormed with as a result an explosion of thoughts, ideas, opinions and voices which have been turned into 70 articles by a group of international writers, well-known and less known. The edition proposes denser contents compared to ‘A’A’s regular editions, connected by a Facebook-like technique.

MVRDV was set up in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV produces designs and studies in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape design. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way, the changing condition is visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram.
The office pursues its fascination and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space through complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes. MVRDV first published a cross section of these study results in FARMAX (1998), followed by a.o. MetaCity/Datatown (1999), Costa Iberica (2000), Regionmaker (2002), 5 Minutes City (2003), KM3 (2005), which contains Pig City and more recently Spacefighter (2007) and Skycar City (2007), the latter two were exhibited at the 2008 Biennale of Venice. MVRDV deals with global ecological issues in large scale studies like Pig City as well as in small scale solutions for flooded areas of New Orleans.
Current projects in progress or on site include various housing projects in the Netherlands, Spain, China, France, Austria, the United Kingdom, USA, Korea, India and other countries, a television centre for Zürich, a bank headquarter building in Oslo, a public library in Spijkenisse (Netherlands), a central market hall in Rotterdam, a culture plaza in Nanjing, China, large scale urban masterplans in Oslo, Norway, Tirana, Albania and a masterplan for an eco-city in Logroño, Spain. Large scale visions for the future of greater Paris and the doubling in size of Dutch new town Almere are developed.
The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and receives international awards. The 60 architects, designers and staff members conceive projects in a multi-disciplinary collaborative design process and apply highest technological and sustainable standards.
Together with the Delft University of Technology MVRDV leads the independent research institute The Why Factory, exploring future cities. Its latest publication is “The Green Dream – How Future Cities can Outsmart Nature”.

A’A’ / L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui
Driven by Jean Nouvel, with the backing of François Fontès and Alexandre Allard, ’A’A’ / L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, marks the rebirth of the review established in 1930 by architect, sculptor and painter André Bloc, in collusion with Le Corbusier. The new L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui review wants to be a forum for the debates where opinions meet and confrontation between points of view is encouraged. In contrast to the cliques and seeking of consensus, it will give proper place to the spirit of criticism and discussion in order to stimulate thought and smash preconceptions.Completely bilingual (French and English), L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui of the 21st century aims to capture the sources, spot today the trends and talents of tomorrow, yet without prejudice and, if necessary, to fly in the face of current thinking.

Studio Banana TV interviews Japanese architect Toyo Ito on the occasion of his lecture at the European University of Madrid. Toyo Ito is one of the world’s most innovative and influential architects. Ito is known for creating extreme concept buildings, in which he seeks to fuse the physical and virtual worlds. Interview realised with the sponsorship of the European University of Madrid.
Toyo Ito (伊東豊雄) is a Japanese architect born in 1941. He graduated from Tokyo University‘s Department of Architecture in 1965. His office Toyo Ito & Associates is a world leading exponent of architecture that addresses the contemporary notion of a “simulated” ciy, and has been called “one of the world’s most innovative and influential architects.”
After a brief stint in the Metabolist studio of Kiyonori Kikutake, in 1971 he started his own studio in Tokyo, named Urbot (“Urban Robot”). In 1979, the studio name was changed to Toyo Ito & Associates. Throughout his early career Ito constructed numerous private house projects that expressed aspects of urban life in Japan. His early experiments include the Tower of Winds, the Egg of Winds and the Pao House for nomad women. Later projects include the Yatsushiro Municipal Museum and the Shimosuwa Municipal Museum. More recently he has built the Sendai Mediatheque (2001), the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London (2002), TOD’s Omotesando Building in Tokyo (2004), the World Games Stadium in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2008) or the Torre Fira BCN Building in Barcelona (2009).
Ito has defined architecture as “clothing” for urban dwellers, particularly in the contemporary Japanese metropolis. This theme revolves around the equilibrium between the private life and the metropolitan “public” life of an individual. The current architecture of Toyo Ito expands on his work produced during the postmodern period, aggressively exploring the potentials of new forms. In doing so, he seeks to find new spatial conditions that manifest the philosophy of borderless beings.

Fitzroy Learning Network (FLN) is a not-for-profit organisation that offers Refugees and newly arrived migrants a safe and welcoming environment to help with their transition to life in Australia. FLN offer numerous educational and social programs as well as provide practical support to help them achieve this. They also offer programs and support services to help marginalised or disadvantaged members of our community. They have received funding to renovate a kitchen, toilet facility and storage area in their back hall as well as adding acoustic insulation to a small music studio where they conduct their after school youth education program. The back hall is a multi purpose space which is used as a classroom, a computer training room as well as a meeting room and function space. The kitchen is used daily by about 45 students to prepare morning tea and is used as a back up kitchen when they have to cater for large events that they hold several times a year. The current toilet is in a bad state and is used as an overflow storage area. They hope to have a usable toilet so the back hall will become a fully serviced space which could be hired out in the future. They re looking for innovative and energy efficient ways to renovate these spaces.

The budget is $50,000 with an option to increase if FLN are able to raise the funds. They are looking for someone to do an initial design proposal and ideally oversee the project to the contract admin stage. There is a 12 month timeline for the project but they would like to start construction in September to line up with the school holidays when building work will not interrupt the classes.

Please email your expressions of interest as well as a CV detailing any similar or relevant project experience to Kalli at kalli@architectsforpeace.org. The selected architect will need to be able to visit the site so a Victorian architect is preferred for this project.

James Sloss Ackerman the doyen of the international community of historians of Renaissance architecture. He is one of the scholars to have created the modern history of architecture, founded on a systematic approach and making use of a critical examination of all written and visual sources. It is capacity to use erudition, a sharp sense of observation combined with the sensibility for architecture and an innate facility to bring back to life the great architects of the past with immediacy, almost making them our contemporaries and constantly present in our culture, is perhaps the greatest of Ackerman’s achievements. His work has had a considerable influence on both historians of architecture and architects themselves. In his field, he has written two of the most important monographs of the century that has just closed, dedicated to Michelangelo and Andrea Palladio.Ackerman was born in San Francisco 1919 and first studied the history of art and architecture at Yale and then New York University under Henri Focillon, Erwin Panofsky and Richard Krautheimer. He discovered Italian art while moving north up the peninsula with the US army in the Second World War. Fascinated by Italy, he chose it as his field of study and obtained a scholarship from the American Academy in Rome. In a series of influential and cultured articles, many of which republished in 1991 in Distance Points: Essays in Theory and Renaissance Art and Architecture, Ackerman opened new horizons regarding the way of considering the Italian Renaissance. Much of Ackerman’s work has been dedicated to Michelangelo, culminating in the excellent monograph, The Architecture of Michelangelo, which was published in English in 1961 and subsequently also in Italian, Spanish, French, Japanese and German. After having written about Michelangelo, Ackerman turned his attention to Palladio, investigating him both as architect and is intellectual in his brilliant book, Palladio, published in 1966, which is still considered the best introduction to this historic figure. The influence of this book has been immense, especially thanks to its innovative approach towards patronage. James Ackerman is a scholar of great originality and productivity, a skilled writer of architecture and a lecturer who has guided many eminent scholars in their first steps. He is a member of the British Academy, of the Royal Academy of Arts, of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura in Vicenza, of the Ateneo Veneto end of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. He has received an honorary degree from the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and he is also a Grande Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.
In 2003, he was awarded the Balzan Prize in the field of the history of architecture and gave half of the prize money to help young architectural historians, financing the publication of their first work via the annual James Ackerman Prize for the history of architecture (now at its fourth edition), and instituting a scholarship at the American Academy in Rome for young foreign students wishing to undertake paleographic studies in Italian archives.

http://www.designboom.com/eng/interview/starck.html
‘you once said that it is your dream to make the world
a better place… is it beauty you are looking for?’
and starck answers ‘no, not for beauty.
we have to replace beauty, which is a cultural concept,
with goodness, which is a humanist concept.’

snapshots | designboom ICFF mart 05
http://www.designboom.com/mart.html
designboom presented talents at the US biggest design happening :
ICFF, the international furniture fair in new york.
in this initiative, the designers were personally presenting their wares
and selling design-originals, priced from a range of USD 10 to USD 100.
it was an unprecedented opportunity to meet the young avant-garde
and became familiar with their body of work.

contemporary | mark frauenfelder
http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/frauenfelder.html
designboom loves ‘the directory of wonderful things’ – the weblog
boingboing.net and the founder’s graphic work and witty texts.
we asked mark frauenfelder to introduce himself,
for the few remaining who haven’t heard of him yet.

contemporary | urs fischer
http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/fisher.html
the nicola trussardi foundation presented swiss artist urs fischer.
one of the three installations, the house of bread, is suspended between
fairy-tale vision and simple, archaic architecture.
it changed during the show, devoured by a dozen multicoloured parrots.

contemporary | rotor house by luigi colani
http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/colani.html
the central idea behind luigi colani’s house is a turning
rotor which incorporates the different functional areas
sleeping, cooking and taking a bath.
