The initiative is sponsored by the Central European Initiative (CEI). Contestants from 23 Central Eastern European countries are called to submit a new project related to the reuse or redefinition of an anonymous or everyday object from recent past. The entry is free.
Theme of the 2012 Competition
In a saturated consumer market where design is everywhere (and nowhere) there are objects from the recent past whose traces are being lost. They are anonymous or everyday objects, on a small scale or mass production. The aim is to build a large memory atlas dedicated to the anonymous design of the countries of Central Eastern Europe, therefore in this year’s competition, participants are asked to identify an object from the collective memory, which demonstrates design skill, it can be simple or complex as long as it is meaningful. The object could be a household tool or alternatively professional equipment or small objects for building. Once the participants have singled out their object they must photograph it on a white backdrop, outline in writing a brief history, comment on the motivations behind the choice and then proceed onto a reuse and redefinition project, which could take shape in a ready-made project or simply a change of function.

Criteria For Participation
The competition is open to all designers born in CEI Member States (Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy, Macedonia, Moldavia, Montenegro, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary) as well as Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Turkey. The potential groups should only comprise participants born in the countries listed above.

Every participant should submit:
- 3 photographs of the object on a white backdrop (JPG or PDF format, minimum resolution 300 dpi);
- a text outlining the story of the object (maximum 800 characters);
- a text accounting for its selection and explaining the new project (maximum 800 characters);
- the new project presented for the competition that must be original and composted of no more than 3 plates in jpg or pdf format, minimum resolution 300 dpi (freehand design, cad, rendering, etc…)

The project should contain all the necessary elements to execute the object.

Terms of Participation and Deadline
Participation in the competition is free. Prospective participants should register using the online form on the webpage www.triestecontemporanea.it. The online application form should be filled out in full in English or Italian and the submitted project must comply with the specified terms. The groups wishing to participate should fill out the form with the name of the head of the group and list the names and countries of birth of the other group members.

The application and attached project – complete with the material described in ART. 3 together with an ID document – must be presented by midnight (Italian time) of the 31st May 2012. All the requested materials should be included directly in the application form. Projects submitted to the committee via alternative application systems will not be accepted. Designers selected by the jury will be notified after the jury have completed their task, estimated by the end of September, and they will be able to submit any final pieces useful to the integration of their project (prototypes, images or videos of real or digital prototypes, etc) in line with deadlines and terms, which will be communicated with those selected directly.

Confidentiality and Rights of Use
All material submitted will be treated as strictly confidential and under no circumstances handed over to third parties, namely anybody external to the judging commission, before the close of the competition. The same confidentiality should be upheld by the selected competitors until the official publication of the results from the organizing body. The Committee reserves the right to publish in an online catalogue the documentation of the competition and the projects of the selected participants and winners. If a contestant wishes to protect their work by applying for copyright or a patent registration, they may do so before displaying their work in the competition.

Examining Comission and Evaluation Criteria
The jury will be headed by Gillo Dorfles and comprise international experts and representatives from CEI and the Trieste Contemporanea. It will convene in the month of June 2012 and will evaluate the projects in the competition according to the following criteria:
1. Originality and depth of research in the study of the memory object;
2. Creation and innovation of the reuse proposal;
3. Completion and clarity in presentation of the work submitted.

Selected Projects and Prizes
- SELECTED PROJECTS: the jury will select a number of works which will be shown in an exhibition in Trieste and published in the online catalogue provided.
- BEBA PRIZE for the youngest designer among those selected: 1000 Euros.
- CEI PRIZE for the best designer from one of the CEI countries not an EU member: 3000 Euros.
- GILLO DORFLES PRIZE – TRIESTE CONTEMPORANEA DESIGN 2010 for the best project: 4000 Euros.

Realization of the Selected Projects
In the eventuality that Trieste Contemporanea wishes to realize the three winning projects of the respective prizes, it will inform the winners immediately. They will in turn be invited to assist in the execution of their work. The final objects will remain the property of Trieste Contemporanea.

Publication of the Competition Results
The competition results will be accessible online at www.triestecontemporanea.it from the month of July 2012. The catalogue will be published online together with the opening of the final exhibition. The results of the exhibition will also be made public by the Committee through the international media and press.

Participation Hors Concours
The organizers reserve the right to invite a number of designers to take on the 2012 theme hors concours and to exhibit in the scheduled exhibitions.

Exhibition of the Selected and Winning Projects
All the selected and winning projects as well as those presented by the designers invited hors concours, will be exhibited in Trieste within December 2012 by the Trieste Contemporanea Committee, which reserves the right to supply other exhibiting venues in Italy and abroad.

Awards Ceremony
The award ceremony will take place in Trieste at the opening of the scheduled final exhibition. The winning designers will be invited to collect their prize in Trieste with expenses covered by the organizing Committee.

The competition, launched in the summer of 2010, asked the American people to submit ideas on ways to “make these iconic but unfinished grounds more welcoming, educational, and effectively used by the public for decades to come”. The multi-stage process narrowed down over 500 entries from around the world to six finalists, and is now inviting the public to vote for “People’s Choice” favorites from among the finalist proposals. Public engagement is crucial for such an event that seeks to generate a national, or even international, discussion, to help shape the future of perhaps the most symbolic American landscape, “not necessarily in the way L’Enfant or the McMillan planners envisioned it but in a new way that speaks to the aspirations of the 21st century.”

Voting takes place online, and remains open until spring 2012, at the competition’s website: http://www.wamocompetition.org/

“A Great Inclined Plane”, proposed by Lucrecia Laudi, COAC, Julian Hunt, AIA, Monling Lee, and Miguel Angel Maldonado Torres of Hunt Laudi Studio, draws its initial inspiration from the experience of the enormous crowds at the last presidential inauguration. The driving idea is to extend the mall with a great inclined viewing platform that would bridge over the interrupting grade crossing at Fourteenth and Fifteenth streets.

Detailed presentation in High Definition

But the proposal by Hunt Laudi Studio should be understood as a complex and ambiguous solution to the question of the Mall informed by a sensibility that might best be expressed as “architecture in a minor key”: an awareness that the agoraphobic scale of the Mall implies an equivalent span of epochal time both ancient and on the far horizons of the future, the birth and death of nations and the cataclysmic events that shape the course of history.

Featuring continuity, innovation, diversity, nature and environmentally conscious, Himalayas Art Museum launched a global call for submission for its new logo design in March this year. Within less than 2 months, over 1,400 pieces of designs were submitted from all over the world. After a 5-day first round selection, proposals of 10 designers stood out and entered the second and final round selection.

They are: Miao Xiaoyong (China), Yang Weijie (China). Hosanna Yau (Hong Kong, China), Timo Tontti (Finland), Wang Xin (China), Hernan Berdichevsky (Argentina), Angelo Romano (Italy), Gao Qian (China), Philips Aldimulyo Budiman (Indonesia) and Elfrio Creative Studio (Spain). On May 8, a jury panel consisting of Shen Qibin (Director of Himalayas Art Museum), Ding Yi (Dean of Fudan Design College, artist), Hu Jieming (Director of Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, artist), Ou Ning (Director of Shao Foundation, curator, artist) and Huang Shengkai (Creative Director of Himalayas Art Museum) made the final selection of the logo design competition. Given the fact that no single entry was unanimously approved by the judges in terms of its fitness to the museum’s philosophy and vision, it was hereby determined that there would be no final winner in the logo design competition. Contestants Wang Xin and Gao Qian are to be rewarded with Award Winning Finalist Prize for the bold creativity shown in their proposals.

The two contestants will be rewarded with a prize of CNY10,000. All finalists will be rewarded with a VIP card of the museum.

Productos con diseño de vanguardia y proyectos arquitectónicos y urbanísticos sustentables se exhibirán en el Green Good Design que abrirá del 6 de abril al 19 de junio de 2011 en el Contemporary Space Athens, Grecia.
Green Good Design: The Latest cutting-edge product design and architecture showcased in an exhibition that opens in Europe. The world’s latest new sustainable product designs, buildings, and urban planning projects form an exhibition that opens at Contemporary Space Athens on April 6 and continues through June 19 and is then scheduled to travel inside Europe through the end of 2011.

Contemporary Space Athens is located at 46-48 Megalou Vassiliou, Rouf/Athens, Greece. An Opening Reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6 from 8:00-10:00 PM. “Green GOOD DESIGN™” is curated by the Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, Finnish/American architecture critic and Director of The Chicago Athenaeum. Organized by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, “Green Good Design” features over 150 awarded industrial and product designs, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning projects in the historic awards program from 2010. Founded in Chicago in 1950 by architects Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames, Good Design is the world’s oldest and most significant global program that awards the best of the best design in terms of visionary products and environments.

Green Good Design Awards 2010
Every year, thousands of leading industrial and graphic design firms, manufacturers, and leading FORTUNE 500 companies vie for this prestigious award worldwide. The familiar Good Design logo, a circle inside a square, designed by Chicago graphic designer, Mort Goldsholl in 1950, is one of the world’s most visible and highly recognized public branding marks. In 2008, The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre added a “Green” edition to this historic Awards Program as a way to emphasize and promote the best new products and environments that are leading today’s “Green Revolution” in order to make a public education statement about the importance of sustainability for consumer product design and our global architecture. The aim of Green GOOD DESIGN is to bring a public appreciation and awareness of a new design paradigm led by a current generation of visionary architects, designers, urban planners, corporations, governments, individuals, and private and public institutions. Designs are based upon the ideals of energy conservation; the reduction of toxic waste and greenhouse gases; the diminishing dependence on fossil fuels; and a sensitivity for waste, pollution, and the depletion of the world’s energy resources. For 2010, the Green GOOD DESIGN Awards recognized cities, governments, organizations, research, programs, and people who are blazing a new path toward a sustainable environment together with new products, buildings and landscape and urban planning projects. The 2010 awarded product designs and architecture are the “best of the best” in new Green thinking from the world’s leading FORTUNE 500 manufacturing firms and most prestigious design offices from over 31 nations. Green Architecture and Green consumer products from the following countries are included in the exhibition: Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Saudia Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Vietnam, and the United States. A total list can be seen in the European Centre’s website at www.europeanarch.eu.

At the top of the list, both institutions honored The City of Madrid as one of the “Greenest” cities on our planet. Madrid is full of abundant huge green parks, magnificent tree-lined boulevards, flowers, emblematic green-scapes, vertical gardens, a boating lake, and an enormous sprawling parkland making the Capital of Spain one of the world’s leading examples of urban beautification and a Green Renaissance in our 21st Century. Other 2010 Awards were also bestowed to foundations, new research/technology, and people including the University of Houston, The German Prof. Peter Latz of Latz + Partners GbR., Kranzberg, Germany was cited for this efforts environmental contributions for sustainability and Green Architecture. Also featured in the exhibition are leading new consumer and building products geared for the mass market audience from some of the world’s most renowned names in manufacturing: Allsteel Inc., Armstrong World Industries, Inc., Artemide SpA., Autodesk Inc., Belux AG., Bodum AG., BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausergäte GmbH., Electrolux Major Appliances, Dell, Inc., Grohe AG., Hansgrohe AG., Haworth, Inc., Herman Miller, Inc., Indesit Company, Johnson Controls Inc..Keramik Laufen AG., Mannington Commercial, Moen Incorporated, Pano Logic, Inc., Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Design, Steelcase, Inc., Sustainable Solutions International (SSi), UPM-Kymmene Ojy., Valcucine SpA., Velux A/S, and VKR Holding A/S. The latest innovations for the Green automotive industry were also awarded in 2010 to and are featured in the exhibition by BMW AG, Critical Move, Daimler AG., and Mercedes-Benz. Other leading the awarded Green Products are new designs for furniture, lighting, washing machines, refrigerators, ovens and cooktops, dishwashers, floorcovering, and packaging design that forward the principals of regeneration, energy efficiency, ecological consequence, deforestation , and renewable energy while providing the latest and most innovative design. These Green consumer designs are the visionary work by some of the foremost industrial design firms worldwide: Almadesign, BMW DesignworksUSA., Daimler AG Werksdesign, fuseproject, Marken Design Bosch, Matteo Thun & Partners, No Picnic Packaging & Design AB., Phoenix Design, Ross Lovegrove, Strømme Throndsen Design, Studio AMDL, srl., Whipsaw Inc., whiteout & glare GmbH., and X-Technology Swiss R&D AG. Numerous architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture firms were also awarded in 2010 for improving the environment, sustainability, and building energy efficiency—one of the most cost-effective ways to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

• “We initiated this special Green Edition of the annual Good Design program to emphasize the most profound and enlightening developments in this new world era of design for sustainability,” states Kieran Conlon, Director/COO, The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies from his office in Dublin, Ireland.

• “Good Design” is not about color, style, impression, or trends but instead about thoughtfully considering the use and user of the product or building, the experience, the social and environmental context, and the impact a building or object has on the surrounding environment,” states Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine.

• “Green Design is Good Design,” he adds. “No design can be considered good design unless it attempts to address all these concerns. We believe in the original modernist ideology of the original GOOD DESIGN program as forwarded by Saarinen and Eames in 1950 that form and function are intertwined in design. Style and substance are not mutually exclusive. Buildings and products are environmental.”

Deadline for submissions for the 2012 Green GOOD DESIGN Awards is September 1, 2011.
Applications for 2012 and more information is available on line at The European Centre’s website > www.europeanarch.eu | lary@chicagoathenaeum.org

After analyzing the given volume, we understood the decision. The building, rather than creating a façade, wanted to disappear and make the station visible to the city. For that reason, we imagined that two big blocks were subtracted from the initial block to maintain views to the station, leaving a thin silhouette on the site. We started being intrigued by the character of the different surfaces of the building. Some of them had always existed on the outside, but others had been exposed through subtraction. We wanted to illustrate this aggressive gesture by treating these two conditions very different ways, strengthening the necessarily big scale of the project in the area through variation. To compensate for the rigidity of the brief and the imposition of the shape we will design a building that is never the same, but rather changes with time and perspective. The originally exterior surfaces will be wrapped homogenously with a layer of diachronic film laminated with glass, a material that can reflect any colour. On one hand, the usage of a single material emphasises the rigid and static geometry of the block; on the other, the diachronic film will provide the building with an ever-changing image.

The perception of the colour of the Manzana 5 will never stay the same. We will not know how the building will look until it is finished and even then we will never be able to control its image. It will change from white to red, to yellow, to pink, to golden… It may look stunning, beautiful, subtle, hideous, or delicate, all on the same day. On the contrary, the inner surfaces will be treated delicately with glass in different white tones. The position of the vertical slabs restricts the views that apartments have to the New Station, the Plaza Sur, or the Avenue; instead they look at each other or the communal garden. In order to make this view a pleasant one we will design the garden with a re-creation of the famous painting La Maja Desnuda (The Nude Maja) by Francisco de Goya, born in Zaragoza in 1746. This painting is one of the best-known works by Goya and the first totally profane life-size female nude in Western art [sic]. The garden will feature this painting scaled to 100 times its original size, in pixellated format. It was interesting to us that the painting and the building already had the same proportions. The required program of Manzana 5 is: all 168 apartments, each of which can be arranged according to 100 different typologies, all fitting within the same structural grid and services layout. The smallest is 40 m2 and the biggest is 180 m2. The building provides for 60.000 m2 of residential, administrative, and retail program.

The architecture of The House should not impose, restrict, limit, or confine any potential of creativity. It should allow maximum flexibility, a vibrant image, and it should represent the dynamism of Art and Culture in Beirut day after day. Let’s escape from the conventional icon, from the megalomaniac frozen gesture, and reinvent the way a city and its culture are represented! The House of Arts and Culture cannot be a static depiction of a single moment in time. It must be dynamic, changeable; like a machine, it should reveal the essence of transformation.

Horizontal and Vertical: “The Magic Box and the Active Plinth”
The programme is grouped according to its qualities. By dividing the functions into two categories according to their requirements on height and street interaction, we obtain two volumes: a tall box and a low plinth. By keeping the plinth as low as possible, we ensure maximum urban conditions, both in the surroundings and within the plinth itself. We obtain a Magic Box and an Active Plinth. The Box is magic because it can host hundreds of different event configurations (Italian, kabuki, No theatre, techno party, mega banquet, exhibitions, conferences, lectures, dance evenings, poetry recitals, fashion shows, concerts, markets, fairs…). The Plinth is active because it hosts all the programmes on two levels, connected physically and visually, allowing for the maximum interaction between the functions on the inside and the maximum connection with the urban on the outside. By concentrating the entire plinth programme on two levels, we minimize the use of the elevator so functions can be continued without interruptions. The back of the magic box presents a large billboard that might announce the activities of the house, or act as a screen for a projected movie, or be rented for advertisements on certain occasions to generate extra funding…. It will also provide protection from the noise of the road and from southern radiation. The top of the plinth becomes an elevated plaza for the visitors of the museum and for pedestrians. At a different level than the street (10 m higher), this Plaza becomes a podium for concerts, a platform for exhibitions… a lively space. As it is situated to the North, it will also be pleasant in summer. The fact that above this 10m plaza, just 50% of the site is occupied will help to liberate a bit of space in the very compact future situation of the area.

Extending, annexing, adding, attaching, including…it is all possible
In order to avoid mono-functional spaces, the distribution of the programme is such that one programme may be extended into the next. For example, the performance halls and the meeting rooms are placed together so that on certain occasions they can combine to host larger events in a spectacular configuration. In the warm months, such events could even be continued onto the elevated Plaza.

Every building has a story. There are lots of buildings which make an impression at first sight and are made even more interesting by their story. In some cases, though, it’s necessary to know the story in order to understand the building. Tiny, inconspicuous or downright ugly structures can prove to be true masterpieces if you know the story behind them. Suddenly they turn out to possess meaning, hidden beauty or simply a really good punchline. That’s what we’re looking for.
Guiding Architects is looking for the narratives behind architecture.
Send us your example of a building with a story!
The lucky winner will receive a trip for 2 persons to Amsterdam, Berlin or Budapest, including flights, 2 nights at a ***-hotel and an exclusive half-day guided tour.
Entrants have to be 30 years or younger (but of age) on 1 March 2011.
Please send a photo (max. 2MB) of a work of architecture, accompanied by an English text (max. 700 words) to info@guiding-architects.net until March 1, 2011.
The winning entry will be selected by a jury from the Guiding Architects Network.

About Guiding Architects
Explaining architecture and telling the stories behind buildings is our business.
Guiding Architects is an international network for architectural guided tours. All members are independent companies, which organize tours on modern architecture and urbanism in the region or city where they are based. All tours are accompanied by local guides with a professional background in architecture. During the tours, current architectural developments, urban contexts, social and political backgrounds and many other issues are presented in an enjoyable and informative way.

Current locations of guiding architects:

What is Total Housing?
The competition originates from Total Housing, the book recently published by Actar, conceived as evidence supporting the qualities of dense, urban living.

Total Housing
Apartments is the first in the series of Total Housing Competitions. The city is resurgent after years of suburban supremacy, but new technologies and socio-economic shifts have made traditional models for urban housing obsolete. Architects and designers are at the forefront of creating physical spaces that react to these new urban conditions, and we want to see them. Total Housing: Apartments is looking for residential projects that address the incongruity between outmoded ideas of domestic space and contemporary urban lifestyles. We are looking for apartments that demonstrate innovation through material applications, programmatic arrangements, technological implementations, or radical conceptual propositions.

Eligibility
The work can be built or proposed, but it must have been conceived or completed within the last 3 years. The work must be submitted by the author or authors of the project [firms, architects, designers, students, teams, anyone].

Categories
Apartment is defined as: a domestic unit for inhabitation within a building occupied by more than one household. Entrants can enter as many projects as they wish, but each project must be classified as one of the following apartment units:

1) One bed
2) Two bed
3) Three bed
4) Three + bed
5) None of the above

Submission Requirements
The project profile must include the following:

• Submission is free + Submit your projects on Architizer.com
• The lead design firm or project leader
• Team
• Project Title
• A brief text [300 words maximum] that describes the project and clearly defines the questions your project addresses and the innovative tools of implementation your project proposes.
• Keywords: To guide the jury’s evaluation of your project, please include one or several keywords that specify your project’s space of inquiry (suggestions: urban policy, material, ecological, social)
• A minimum of five documents, including at least:
• One (1) a diagram, drawing or image that explains the core idea in your project
• Two (2) plans, sections or details
• Two (2) images, renderings or photographs
• The tag “THA2010″ must be added as a tag to the project profile, without this tag the project will not be eligible. Note the category of your entry by adding it to your tag after an underscore. For instance, a one bed apartment will be tagged THA2010_1. Whereas a three+ bed apartment will be tagged: THA2010_3.

Deadline
11.59pm EST November 28th 2010

The Jury
- Elisa Ours (VP of Planning and Design, Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group)
- Joel Sanders (founder and principal, Joel Sanders Architect)
- Calvin Tsao (principal, Tsao & McKown Architects)
- Marc Kushner, AIA (cofounder of Architizer.com)
- Wayne Congar (Editor, Actar NY)
- Albert Ferre (Managing Editor, Actar)
- Eva Franch (Director, Storefront for Art and Architecture)

Selection
The jury will deliver the results on December 6th in New York City. There will be 5 winners, one from each category, along with a number of honorable mentions. The winning designs will be featured on Architizer’s front page, a selection of the projects will be asked to be part of the Total Housing 01: Apartments performance-exhibition at Storefront for Art and Architecture in NYC, and asked to contribute their work to the upcoming publication of Total Housing in print, by Actar Publishers and online by Architizer

What’s next?
