Working on an optimal integration of water tasks in rural development

The Government Service for Land and Water Management (DLG) and the Dutch Association of Regional Water Authorities (UvW) are organizing the symposium ‘Water management & Spatial Planning’ on the 13th of October in the Watermuseum in Arnhem. The central theme of this gathering will be ‘Optimal integration of water functions in the spatial planning of rural areas’, in the context of the development of nature and recreation areas and ensuring agricultural sustainability. International experts will share their vision of the relationship between water management and spatial planning in the 13th edition of the NethCID symposium.

The cohesive nature of the different uses of an area is increasingly acknowledged in the process of area development. An array of stakeholders such as inhabitants, governments, entrepreneurs and organized interest groups has to rely on each other to define and realize important socio-economic and spatial tasks. Water management is one of these. A key issue is the integration of the planning and management of the water system into the planning and management of an area as a whole. During the seminar we will analyze the balancing of different interests and the mutual reconciliation in spatial planning and highlight any notable similarities and differences.

Improvement interaction in rural development
The goal of this symposium is to name the necessary conditions that lead to a process of integration and reconciliation in rural development, between the private and public parties involved, the (intended) uses of a rural area and the financing of (re)development and management. During the program, the chairman Peter Glas, also chairman of the Regional Water Authority will take a closer look at interesting contrasts in approach and balancing functions and interests in different countries and regions. Of course this is all with the end goal in mind of learning from each other about water catchments, water storage and water drainage and simultaneously improving the quality of space, safety, recreation, the natural environment and or agriculture. You will find more information on www.nethCID2009.nl where you can apply from this moment on (price € 149 p.p.).

NethCID2009
The Dutch Committee of the International Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), the Nethcid, has facilitated the symposium. ICID is an organization of professionals in the area of water management with members in 70 countries. This year the international symposium will be hosted and organized by the Government Service for Land and Water Management (DLG) and the Dutch Association of Regional Water Authorities (UvW).

For 75 years the Government Service for Land and Water Management has been the obvious green partner in rural development. The Government Service for Land and Water Management works with partners, inhabitants, governments and interested parties on realizing the optimal spatial planning of green areas. Spatial planning and management of the water system plays a key role.

The Dutch Association of Regional Water Authorities aims to promote the interests of Regional Water Authorities (‘waterschappen’) at a national and international level. All of the 26 Regional Water Authorities are member of the Association. The main task of the Association is safeguarding the interests of its members with regard to third parties, more particularly the national government and parliament. This function becomes apparent, for example, in consultations with the ministries and Members of Parliament, in comments on policy documents and memorandums, in the participation of advisory and consultative bodies, and so on.

For more information or for an application to NethCID2009 you can contact Xander de Bruine, project manager NethCID2009, tel. number: 0031 6 51522405 or email address: xander@projectplatforms.com

Experimental Media in Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, MoMA 1972

BEYOND MEDIA presents – thanks to the recent reinterpretation by Peter Lang, Luca Molinari and Mark Wasiuta – an exceptional selection of videos which were originally produced on the occasion of the exhibition curated by Emilio Ambasz at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1972. The exhibition “encountered the dynamic and complexly political Italian design context of the early seventies, which it examined and organized into a matrix of categories, differences and distinctions” and it consecrated the radicalism and anticonformism of Italian design, in the works of Sottsass Jr., Colombo, Superstudio, Pesce.

PICNIC AT THE TEMPIO RIVER (photo by Salvatore Gozzo)

The foundational element of the workshop is the Linear Park. And all of the activities are to take place in the area surrounding its core. The project for the Linear Park has a long and significant history which started off when its founder, Marco Navarra started to sense that a series of old abandoned train-tracks, located at the heart of Sicily, could come back to life with an alternative function of their own. The Linear Park become the site where every spring architects and designers coming from all over the world meet to talk about the landscape and work on the interactions it has with arts and architecture.

German contribution to the 11th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2008.
The German pavilion at this year’s Architecture Biennale in Venice will focus on sustainability beyond green building. It will present concepts, ways of thinking and strategies that aim to change behaviour patterns and our ideas of life.
Updating Germany shows small and large steps into a better future – ecologically and socially sustainable projects that are conceived, planned, or built in Germany or by German architects, designers, artists and engineers. Primarily these are research projects design experiments and pilot projects – and not just in architecture and urban planning. This interdisciplinary approach corresponds with the overall theme of this year’s Biennale Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, focussing on experimentation and research and examining the wider impact of architecture. The 11th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia is running from 14 September until 23 November, 2008.
Updating Germany is curated by Friedrich von Borries and Matthias Böttger from the Berlinbased agency raumtaktik, which pursues investigation of space and spatial intervention. Both were appointed as general commissioners by the German Federal Ministry of Transportation, Building and Urban Affairs. They are the youngest curators that were ever commissioned to curate the German contribution to the world’s biggest and most important exhibition on architecture and urban development, the Architecture Biennale in Venice.
Updating Germany is collection, documentation and discussion: The exhibition Updating Germany asks: How do we want to live tomorrow? Contemporary schemes and research projects from the extended field of architecture provide a framework for a way forward in a socially and ecologically responsible and sustainable manner. The catalogue Updating Germany presents, as the subtitle suggests, 100 Projects for a Better Future: from realistic architecture to visionary experiments, research projects and futuristic fantasies. The second accompanying publication A Better Future? In Search of the Spaces of Tomorrow imagines possible worlds in which we might have to live tomorrow.
The press preview of the German pavilion will take place on 11 September, 2008. A press conference will be held on 12 September, 2008. For further information, interview requests and images, please contact: sally below cultural affairs (Berlin)

Introductory Statement by the General Commissioners
Consumption, participation, fun, solidarity, growth, modesty, engagement, balance, austerity, love, hope, cooperation… How do we want to live? Global injustice is increasing ever more visibly, and climate change and environmental destruction contribute their part. One can no longer feel comfortable with this even in the rich West. At the same time, the majority does not appear willing to do without the amenities of their bubble of affluence. How long can we continue to afford this indifference? Is it possible to dissolve the contradictions? Is there a future between consumption and cooperation, between growth and austerity, between fortification and freedom?
These are big questions. Architecture can and does contribute to answering them. Buildings are sealed, insulated and optimized. But that will not be enough. That’s why we are interested in concepts, ways of thinking and strategies that aim to change behaviour patterns and our ideas of life. As radical pragmatists, we thereby operate with updates. We are familiar with updates from the computer: the system is further developed in steps. Each version brings improvements and innovations, but sometimes also new mistakes. For the problems of our world we also need many small steps that can rapidly become larger. Updating Germany shows such small and large steps – ecologically and socially sustainable projects that are conceived, planned or built in Germany or by German architects, designers and engineers. Primarily these are research projects, design experiments and pilot projects – and not just in architecture and urban planning. Here the point is not right or wrong, nor completeness. The challenges are much too complex for that. Rather, the aim here is a joint search we must all carry out. The projects we present are merely suggestions and inspiration for this. One may laugh at some of the ideas some day, while in retrospect others will be recognized as pioneers of a new way of thinking, perhaps even of a new epoch.
One thing is clear: we must think and act in many directions at the same time. There will be detours and wrong turns. We will have to live with this multi-optionality. We see it as opportunity, perhaps our last opportunity. A new idea about life will emerge, a new culture.
An architecture that is more than building will be part of it. Friedrich von Borries, Matthias Böttger, May 2008

The International Art Exhibition to run from 7th June to 22nd November 2009

La Biennale di Venezia’s 53rd International Art Exhibition will run from 7th June to 22nd November 2009 in the traditional venues of the Giardini and the Arsenale, as well as in various other locations around the city. The dates have been fixed by the Biennale’s board of directors, chaired by Paolo Baratta. As already announced, the Director of the Visual Arts Sector of the Biennale is Daniel Birnbaum, with specific responsibility for curating the 53rd International Art Exhibition.Born in Stockholm in 1963, Daniel Birnbaum is curator for institutions and exhibitions internationally and has since 2001 been Rector of the Staedelschule in Frankfurt-am-Main (Germany), an international Academy that brings together contemporary art and the development of new practices and techniques. Since 1998, he has been an editor of Artforum, New York, for which he has been regularly writing since 1995. He has also regularly contributed to other periodicals, such as Parkett and Frieze since the early 1990s.

Upon being nominated on 7th April 2008, Daniel Birnbaum declared: “My recent exhibitions have all been realised in close collaboration with the artists, often through an individual relationship, and sometimes in a broader context. La Biennale di Venezia is a new kind of challenge but the principle remains the same: the artist’s vision must remain at the centre of everything”.
