The BIO 23 exhibition will be held from 27 September to 11 November 2012 at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings are committed to creating a show that will not only exhibit design works but also communicate with visitors, tell them a story and inspire them. An international jury comprising design experts Giulio Cappellini, Sven Jonke, Sophie Lovell, Jimmy MacDonald and Vasa J. Perović will present awards to the best of the exhibited design works. The BIO Gold Medal, BIO Green Award, BIO Honourable mentions, and the Award for a Student Work will be presented at the opening ceremony of the Biennial on 27 September.

Online entries for exhibitors: 6 February–30 March 2012
Established and emerging young designers, commissioners, manufacturers, tutors, students, design labels, creative collectives, cultural institutions and others are invited to apply for BIO 23 exhibition; the deadline for entries is 30 March 2012. On-line entries for exhibitors

The curators are authors of well-known design events Ventura Lambrate® at Salone del Mobile; Ventura Berlin 2011 at Qubique, and collaborators of designers, companies and organizations, such as Maarten Baas, Kiki van Eijk, Nodus, Hermes, Cappellini, Swarovski, Louis Vuitton, Design Miami, Art Museum Tokyo and Moooi. According the curators BIO 23 will show fresh new ideas and explore how design relates to the social, the sustainable, and the cultural, while displaying crossovers between culture and commerce, crafts and industry. They will select the works to be exhibited from the submissions they receive in response to the Call for Entries. Designers, commissioners, producers, students and design organisations, from anywhere in the world, have time until 30 March 2012 to submit products, concepts and projects, from any area of design, which have been created in the past two years.

BIO Design Awards and international jury
The works exhibited at the Biennial will be competing, for the 23rd time, for the BIO Design Awards. The awards given at BIO represent recognition of quality in design. A jury comprising design experts Giulio Cappellini, Sven Jonke, Sophie Lovell, Jimmy MacDonald and Vasa J. Perović will present awards to the best of the exhibited design works. The BIO Gold Medal, BIO Green Award, BIO Honourable mentions, and the Award for a Student Work will be presented at the opening ceremony of the Biennial on 27 September. The BIO awards are given in accordance with professional standards set by the organiser and the international design experts who constitute the jury. The award-winning works will be included in the International Design Collection of the Museum of Architecture and Design.

New Developments with BIO 23
Preparations are under way for a fresh and exciting Biennial. With the aim of further modernising and internationalising the event, the Museum of Architecture and Design has invited the well-known curators and design promoters Margo Konings and Margriet Vollenberg of the studio Organisation in Design to collaborate with it on this year’s Biennial. Thus, in its 48th year, the Biennial exhibition has received a thematic concept and title and has expanded its scope to include all areas of design.

With BIO 23, the name of the event has changed as well: the Biennial of Industrial Design has become the Biennial of Design. Today it is clear more than ever that it is impossible to set limits on design; the different fields of design are overlapping, while one of the strengths of design is its ability to make connections and supplement its work both within the profession and with fields outside of it. The notion that design is one of the most responsive disciplines to social and cultural change has also informed the new developments in the content and organisation of Ljubljana’s Biennial of Design.

After a successful premiere at London Design Festival 2011, the next presentation of the exhibition Silent Revolutions: Contemporary Design in Slovenia will be in Eindhoven, at Zona Ventosa from 22 to 30 October during Dutch Design Week 2011. The exhibition will be opened on Tuesday 25 October at 7 pm by the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia, His Excellency Leon Marc. The keynote speaker will be Hans Ibelings, editor of A10 new European architecture.

The Silent Revolutions exhibition, which brings together more than 25 selected works set in dialogue with historically iconic design objects, is the first extensive international presentation of Slovene product design of the last two decades. It was a success in London with around 9,200 visitors in four days and received a positive response from visitors and experts with several invitations for presentation and cooperation abroad. Slovenia’s rising contemporary design scene has attracted international interest; among other events when presented along with established names from the world design scene, with Nika Zupanc’s presentation at Superbrands London, and through Gigodesign’s participation in Blueprint Magazine’s discussion at 100% Design. The exhibition has also been selected for inclusion in the Icon Design Trail, the only independent guide to the LDF, which highlights only the most interesting, new, and must-see events and shows at the festival.

The Silent Revolutions comprises a selection of design that marks the first two decades of this young European country. Rather than showing a sweeping overall view the show focuses on outstanding individual cases. The selected design exhibits embody the passion and obsession of individual artists, the drive, innovative development and high-quality production, ranging from the filigree turn-tables by Franc Kuzma and the seductive Black Cherry Lamps by designer Nika Zupanc to Seaway’s Greenline 33 Hybrid, the world’s first large hybrid boat, and Trimo’s Qbiss One with ArtMe modular façade systems. The exhibition also presents certain key productions from the country’s largest actors in the industry, including Elan’s revolutionary series of WaveFlex skis designed in cooperation with Gigodesign studio, Alpina’s Racing Elite cross-country ski boots developed in cooperation with Jure Miklavc studio, and Gorenje’s Simplicity home appliance line by Gorenje Design Studio. The exhibition that illustrates important or even turning-point moments in the history of Slovene design, albeit in terms of a new design mentality or new development trends, is accompanied with an extensive publication that does not focus only on the products and individual designers and studios, but also on clients and producers who played an important role in the implementation of these projects.

By combining economics and culture, together with concerted cooperation with government institutions active in creative industries, this project aims to represent the best of Slovene production and companies and, in so doing, raising Slovenia’s profile through industrial design. The exhibition in London is just the first step toward better recognition of Slovenian companies that appear on foreign markets independently and with their own products, trademarks, and market strategies. After its premiere in London and now Dutch Design Week, the exhibition will be also on display in other important European centers, such as Milan and Helsinki.

Productos con diseño de vanguardia y proyectos arquitectónicos y urbanísticos sustentables se exhibirán en el Green Good Design que abrirá del 6 de abril al 19 de junio de 2011 en el Contemporary Space Athens, Grecia.
Green Good Design: The Latest cutting-edge product design and architecture showcased in an exhibition that opens in Europe. The world’s latest new sustainable product designs, buildings, and urban planning projects form an exhibition that opens at Contemporary Space Athens on April 6 and continues through June 19 and is then scheduled to travel inside Europe through the end of 2011.

Contemporary Space Athens is located at 46-48 Megalou Vassiliou, Rouf/Athens, Greece. An Opening Reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6 from 8:00-10:00 PM. “Green GOOD DESIGN™” is curated by the Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, Finnish/American architecture critic and Director of The Chicago Athenaeum. Organized by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, “Green Good Design” features over 150 awarded industrial and product designs, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning projects in the historic awards program from 2010. Founded in Chicago in 1950 by architects Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames, Good Design is the world’s oldest and most significant global program that awards the best of the best design in terms of visionary products and environments.

Green Good Design Awards 2010
Every year, thousands of leading industrial and graphic design firms, manufacturers, and leading FORTUNE 500 companies vie for this prestigious award worldwide. The familiar Good Design logo, a circle inside a square, designed by Chicago graphic designer, Mort Goldsholl in 1950, is one of the world’s most visible and highly recognized public branding marks. In 2008, The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre added a “Green” edition to this historic Awards Program as a way to emphasize and promote the best new products and environments that are leading today’s “Green Revolution” in order to make a public education statement about the importance of sustainability for consumer product design and our global architecture. The aim of Green GOOD DESIGN is to bring a public appreciation and awareness of a new design paradigm led by a current generation of visionary architects, designers, urban planners, corporations, governments, individuals, and private and public institutions. Designs are based upon the ideals of energy conservation; the reduction of toxic waste and greenhouse gases; the diminishing dependence on fossil fuels; and a sensitivity for waste, pollution, and the depletion of the world’s energy resources. For 2010, the Green GOOD DESIGN Awards recognized cities, governments, organizations, research, programs, and people who are blazing a new path toward a sustainable environment together with new products, buildings and landscape and urban planning projects. The 2010 awarded product designs and architecture are the “best of the best” in new Green thinking from the world’s leading FORTUNE 500 manufacturing firms and most prestigious design offices from over 31 nations. Green Architecture and Green consumer products from the following countries are included in the exhibition: Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Saudia Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Vietnam, and the United States. A total list can be seen in the European Centre’s website at www.europeanarch.eu.

At the top of the list, both institutions honored The City of Madrid as one of the “Greenest” cities on our planet. Madrid is full of abundant huge green parks, magnificent tree-lined boulevards, flowers, emblematic green-scapes, vertical gardens, a boating lake, and an enormous sprawling parkland making the Capital of Spain one of the world’s leading examples of urban beautification and a Green Renaissance in our 21st Century. Other 2010 Awards were also bestowed to foundations, new research/technology, and people including the University of Houston, The German Prof. Peter Latz of Latz + Partners GbR., Kranzberg, Germany was cited for this efforts environmental contributions for sustainability and Green Architecture. Also featured in the exhibition are leading new consumer and building products geared for the mass market audience from some of the world’s most renowned names in manufacturing: Allsteel Inc., Armstrong World Industries, Inc., Artemide SpA., Autodesk Inc., Belux AG., Bodum AG., BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausergäte GmbH., Electrolux Major Appliances, Dell, Inc., Grohe AG., Hansgrohe AG., Haworth, Inc., Herman Miller, Inc., Indesit Company, Johnson Controls Inc..Keramik Laufen AG., Mannington Commercial, Moen Incorporated, Pano Logic, Inc., Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Design, Steelcase, Inc., Sustainable Solutions International (SSi), UPM-Kymmene Ojy., Valcucine SpA., Velux A/S, and VKR Holding A/S. The latest innovations for the Green automotive industry were also awarded in 2010 to and are featured in the exhibition by BMW AG, Critical Move, Daimler AG., and Mercedes-Benz. Other leading the awarded Green Products are new designs for furniture, lighting, washing machines, refrigerators, ovens and cooktops, dishwashers, floorcovering, and packaging design that forward the principals of regeneration, energy efficiency, ecological consequence, deforestation , and renewable energy while providing the latest and most innovative design. These Green consumer designs are the visionary work by some of the foremost industrial design firms worldwide: Almadesign, BMW DesignworksUSA., Daimler AG Werksdesign, fuseproject, Marken Design Bosch, Matteo Thun & Partners, No Picnic Packaging & Design AB., Phoenix Design, Ross Lovegrove, Strømme Throndsen Design, Studio AMDL, srl., Whipsaw Inc., whiteout & glare GmbH., and X-Technology Swiss R&D AG. Numerous architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture firms were also awarded in 2010 for improving the environment, sustainability, and building energy efficiency—one of the most cost-effective ways to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

• “We initiated this special Green Edition of the annual Good Design program to emphasize the most profound and enlightening developments in this new world era of design for sustainability,” states Kieran Conlon, Director/COO, The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies from his office in Dublin, Ireland.

• “Good Design” is not about color, style, impression, or trends but instead about thoughtfully considering the use and user of the product or building, the experience, the social and environmental context, and the impact a building or object has on the surrounding environment,” states Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine.

• “Green Design is Good Design,” he adds. “No design can be considered good design unless it attempts to address all these concerns. We believe in the original modernist ideology of the original GOOD DESIGN program as forwarded by Saarinen and Eames in 1950 that form and function are intertwined in design. Style and substance are not mutually exclusive. Buildings and products are environmental.”

Deadline for submissions for the 2012 Green GOOD DESIGN Awards is September 1, 2011.
Applications for 2012 and more information is available on line at The European Centre’s website > www.europeanarch.eu | lary@chicagoathenaeum.org

For the first time, Gianpietro Carlesso is working on a project for a personal exhibition for the city of Trieste. The exhibition CURVATURE (CURVATURES), which will open on February 19 at the Studio Tommaseo, will show the most recent work of this extraordinary sculptor who, with amazing simplicity, demonstrates to contemporary man how the concentrated energy of stone can evoke inexhaustible interrogatives on the sense of being. Carlesso, who was born in Bolzano and graduated in Urbino returns to Italy after a long German parentheses which included the prestigious stipendium Wilhelm Lehbruck of Diusburg, and courageously makes Cormons, a small town in the area of Gorizia, the starting base for his intense and vigorous international artistic activity. The corpus of his works, organized in cycles, often of large dimensions and designed to be inserted in a natural environment (as in the recent case of the work “Isola felix”, placed on a lake of high altitude in Zeel am See, on the Alps surrounding Salzburg) now leads to the series Curvatures, of which in Trieste we will see the powerful number 11, in marble of Lasa, number 12, in cedar of Lebanon and corian, and number 13, in Black Vallone.

A series of in-depth encounters and a catalogue-project with the contribution of scholars of various disciplines will accompany the exhibition, which will be open until the 9th of April.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. New realities for changing lifestyles.

We face a future in many cases full of uncertainties; at the same time, however, we are aware of the many problems in front of us: the list is long, but only to mention some we must tackle integration, personal safety, food safety, energy safety and sources, economy, waste safety, resources safety, suburb degrade and so on… To fight our fears we need finding the way to proceed with a sort of sensible, creative and interesting planning that could produce ideas, proposals and answers able to guarantee an upgrading of life quality, for us as well as for our children and the people around us. It is an idea of Happiness that we build by rolling up our sleeves, and which is generated by different people all sharing the intent of living together to create new communities. This idea translates into four new places, each narrated trough four hyperrealistic models, pictures and drawings.

An international corporation moves its headquarters to the industrial zone of a town in the Alpine foothills. About one thousand persons are employed there, most of whom are young creative professionals from all over the world. In an abandoned area in the town center, a new neighborhood is created where this alien community can find room to integrate and to become a resource for the territory.

The Venetian lagoon offers amazing landscapes and incredible biodiversity. A young group that works on innovative start-ups connected with new technologies decides to utilize a large agricultural property surrounded by water, as a settlement where about 250 young people can live and work. This leads to the possibility of developing a new campus model, in a situation of nutritional and energy self-sufficiency: agriculture, vegetable gardens, tourism and technology can thus coexist in the same environment.

On the outskirts of Milan, near the northern expressway, a new subway station is being built, intersecting with the metropolitan rail bypass. This is an opportunity to invent a new public space that hosts functional activities of neighborhood life, like: daycare center, library, kitchen sharing, outdoor cinema, concert hall, work lounge, outdoor market, skate park, rent hotel. Above the porticoes there is a complex of small housing units and low-cost work spaces designed for students and immigrants, who share a similar economic condition. This facility can take advantage of the wide range of services installed in this location.

One hour from Shanghai, a large rural territory with an ancient agricultural tradition is crushed between a growing industrial zone and a new city. The idea is to create an agricultural park of 4 sq km inhabited by 8000 persons with low-density residential structures, preserving the agriculture and offering green spaces for the inhabitants. The project calls for a group of elevated buildings on the streets, to create a perpendicular grid that floats over the countryside. In the middle of this “agricultural central park” there are specialized farms that produce crops for the sustainable, profitable development of the countryside. The challenge is to create a new community with shared services, new activities and relationships, in tune with the territory.

Seis equipos resultaron finalistas de la convocatoria ‘V&A at Dundee – Making it Happen’.

The ‘V&A at Dundee – Making it Happen’ exhibition features work from the six shortlisted teams of world-class architects and designers who have put forward outstanding ideas for a landmark building that will house the V&A at Dundee and dominate Dundee’s waterfront. The six shortlisted companies who feature in the exhibition are: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, Kengo Kuma & Associates, REX, Snøhetta, Steven Holl Architects and Sutherland Hussey Architects.

Designers were invited to make proposals for a building that reflects the V&A at Dundee project partnership’s desire to stimulate commerce as well as local and visitor interest.
The V&A at Dundee will:
● be a rich and inspiring resource for design and creativity.
● attract visitors from Dundee, Scotland and further afield to world-class travelling and permanent exhibitions.
● improve the attractiveness of Dundee and its region to business.

The shortlisted teams:

Delugan Meissl Associated Architects were formed 15 years ago and are based in Vienna. Their first major buildings were two large-scale housing projects in Vienna: the “Beam”, built in 1998 and the “Mischek Tower”, which was completed two years later. More recent projects include the Global Headquarter Sandoz of the Novartis Company (2003), “Ray1”, the often published house on a rooftop near Vienna’s city centre, the “City Lofts” and the “High Rise” in the Wienerberg district.
Besides multiple successes in international competitions, Delugan Meissl’s contribution for the first Architecture Biennal in China attracted international attention. The completion of the new Porsche Museum, the forthcoming building of the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam and an ex-aequo first-prize selection for the “Darat King Abdullah II Cultural Center” of Amman, Jordan (2008) are evidence of the firm’s further steps into international work.
Delugan Meissl is based on an open structure which encourages interaction and interdisciplinary exchange which are in their view crucial parameters for each professional challenge they face. They believe that interaction between disciplines such as natural sciences, arts and music leads to the most creative new results and to surprising coherences. Their structure resembles a wide spread network rather than a hierarchic organization, in which each member contributes by sharing their ideas and using their specific talents and abilities. According to this general approach, their office cooperates with individually formed groups of renowned partners and specialists for the realisation of international projects.

The design team led by Delugan Meissl includes Wenzel+Wenzel (Germany), Werner Sobek (Germany) and Büro Kiefer (Germany).

Kengo Kuma & Associates is a middle-size architectural practice founded in 1990 in Japan with their European offices based in Paris. They are involved in a wide range of design scales from furniture and product design to architecture and urban scale planning.
Kengo Kuma is a Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Tokyo and has won many awards including the prestigious Architectural Institute of Japan Award in 1997. His stated goal is to recover the design of traditional buildings and to reinterpret it for the 21st century utilising the inspiration of light and nature to help achieve this.
The essence of their approach is the use of natural materials in order to create airy, open spaces filled with sunlight. They believe that their architecture must be flexible and open; structures must harmonize with and be “friendly” towards the human body. Everything must be light and gentle; from the planning of the structure and the ventilation system to the designing of the way light filters through the building. These principles are the complete opposite of what a concrete building normally stands for. Only by taking this path do they believe architecture finally blends into and becomes one with nature.
Two recent examples of this approach are; the 12,000sqm Art Museum for the City of Nagasaki in Japan completed by Kuma in 2005, and their designs for the Contemporary Arts Centre in Marseille, France, which is currently under construction.

Kengo Kuma’s team for the V&A project includes cre8architecture (Scotland), ARUP (UK), Optimi sed Environments Ltd (Scotland) and CBA (Scotland).

REX is an internationally-acclaimed architecture and design firm based in New York City, USA. Their recently completed work includes the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre for the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, Texas, and the Istanbul headquarters for Vakko and Power Media (Turkey’s preeminent fashion and media companies).
Other cultural projects in progress include Museum Plaza, a 62-story mixed-use skyscraper housing a contemporary art center in Louisville, Kentucky, and the new Central Library and Music Conservatory for the city of Kortrijk, Belgium. REX is designing a large residential development in Songdo Landmark City, South Korea.
Notably, within the past year REX received second prize in two international competitions; one for the new Edvard Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, and the other for the Finnish Innovation Fund’s Low2No sustainable development in Helsinki, Finland.
REX actively works at all scales of design, from the urban masterplan for Governors Island, an invitation-only design competition of 172 acres in New York City, USA, down to the tiny (Doll)House for Calvin Klein’s flagship store in New York City, USA.
REX was originally founded in 2000 by partners Joshua Prince-Ramus and Rem Koolhaas as OMA New York, an American affiliate of the Rotterdam-based Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). In 2006, OMA New York severed its strategic alliance with OMA and Prince-Ramus renamed the firm REX. While serving as OMA New York’s Principal, Prince-Ramus was Principal in Charge of the Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum, the Guggenheim Las Vegas Museum and the Seattle Central Library, hailed as Time magazine’s 2004 Building of the Year and by the New York Times architecture critic Herbert Muschamp as “the most exciting new building it has been my honor to review in more than 30 years of writing about architecture.” In 2005, the Seattle Central Library was awarded the top honours bestowed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Library Association (ALA). It also was the first LEED-Silver rated building of its type in the United States.

The REX design team for the V&A project also includes Magnusson Klemencic Associates (USA), DCI (USA), Buro Happold (UK), Bureau Bas Smets (Belgium), Lord Cultural Resources (USA) and Urban Splash Group (UK).

Snøhetta is an integrated architecture practice established in 1989 upon winning the international design competition for the Alexandria Library in Egypt. Since its completion in 2001, this historic building has received many awards and prizes, including the highly valued Aga Khan award in 2004. The company currently has around 120 people, based in Oslo with a smaller branch office in New York and soon to be represented in the Middle East.
The practice has a long track record of delivering world class arts and cultural buildings across the world. Their concern for cultural buildings has sustained the practice throughout its life and is reflected in their current portfolio that includes the 1,600 seat Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, the World Trade Centre Museum in New York, and the Cultural House in Sandvika, Oslo.
Snøhetta’s long-standing experience in the international marketplace has been characterized by several unique characteristics. Its emphasis upon larger projects, especially larger international public projects such as theatres and museums has given it the capacity to create unique architectural designs using the most contemporary methods of planning. Snøhetta is equipped to undertake a holistic design process due to its rich mix of architecture, landscape and interior disciplines.

The Snøhetta multidisciplinary team for the V&A project includes Gareth Hoskins Architects (UK), Lord Cultural Resources (Canada), Davis Langdon (Scotland), Adams Kara Taylor (UK) and th e BDSP Partnership (UK).
The office has a diverse range of work ranging from large urban planning proposals and public and private commissions to small one-off commissions for private clients. Their portfolio of projects has come about through thirteen years of building up a reputation for high quality design. Although they have yet to receive significant commissions in Scotland, their skills and commitment are bearing fruit abroad and they now have a wide portfolio of work ranging from Master-planning to the design of Embassies, Hotels, Museums, Factories, Commercial developments and residential work.
Their arts project in Tiree was awarded the RSA Gold Medal, a RIBA Regional Award , the RIAS Architecture award, and was short-listed for both the Stirling Prize in 2003 and the Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture in 2005.
